A Journey Through Life: Conversations with My Father

Hey, Resilientites! I’m Naketa Ross, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Resilient Life blog, where we dive deep into the transformative power of resilience. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been with us for a while, you're in the right place to discover the tools and insights that will help you build a stronger, more resilient life. My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.

In this special and personal post, I had the privilege of sitting down with my father, James Buckner. As I reflect on our conversation, it’s clear that this episode touched on themes of joy, resilience, and the complex nature of life’s experiences. My father’s wisdom, shaped by 73 years of life, is filled with valuable lessons and heartfelt memories that I am honored to share.

Finding Joy in Simple Moments

When I asked my dad what brings him joy, his answer was immediate: his granddaughter. He spoke fondly of how his heart melts every time she calls him "pop pop." That pure and simple connection, full of love and joy, reminded me of the importance of cherishing these everyday moments. His greatest wish for his grandchildren? For them to be healthy and happy. It's a beautiful wish, free from material desires, focused on what truly matters in life.

Reflections on War and Its Lasting Impact

My father is a Vietnam veteran, and his service has left lasting impressions on him, some of which we explored during our talk. He shared how witnessing the horrors of war changed him profoundly. He didn’t shy away from the tough realities, acknowledging the trauma he still carries with him. It was sobering to hear him talk about how this led to struggles with alcoholism and drug use, but he also spoke about his journey to overcome these challenges.

When I asked how he conquered those battles, his response was grounded in practicality. For health reasons, he had to stop drinking, and cutting back on smoking became a conscious decision. His story is one of resilience, where despite life’s harsh circumstances, he managed to find a path forward.

“Growing Up "Chicago Tough"

Hearing about my father's childhood in the Robert Taylor projects of Chicago offered a window into the challenges he faced growing up. His description of the violence he witnessed as a teenager was harrowing. Seeing two people die at 16 left an indelible mark on him. Yet, he didn't let that moment define him. He found ways to survive and eventually thrive in an environment that could have easily consumed him.

Life Lessons and Wisdom

Throughout the conversation, I asked my father what life lessons he’d want to pass on. One that stood out to me was his advice to avoid alcohol, understanding firsthand how it can harm you in the long run. It was simple yet profound advice, grounded in experience and reflection. When asked about patience, my father chuckled, admitting that he’s still working on it. His honesty about not being perfect and continuing to learn throughout life was refreshing and real.

Fond Memories and Family Connections

Some of my favorite moments in the episode came when we reminisced about family memories. From my dad helping my daughter learn to ride a bike in less than 30 minutes, to his favorite memory of me graduating from college, these stories were filled with love and pride. Hearing him describe how he always made sure to take my oldest daughter to school despite the long public transportation rides in Chicago, reminded me of the lengths parents will go to ensure their children have better opportunities.

One of his best memories was from my childhood—carrying me on his shoulders. I remember feeling like a princess as he carried me around, and I was devastated when he eventually stopped. Those small, intimate memories are what make relationships so special, and it’s a reminder to treasure the people we hold dear.

The Power of Resilience

What I found most powerful throughout our conversation was my father’s resilience. From enduring war, battling addiction, to building a life despite difficult circumstances, his story is a testament to human strength. He may not see himself as particularly profound, but to me, his life lessons are incredibly meaningful. He reminds us that we all make mistakes, but that doesn’t diminish the value of the good choices we make along the way.

Final Thoughts: Conversations like this one are precious.

They provide insight into the lives of those who came before us and the wisdom they’ve gained from their journey. My father’s story is filled with moments of hardship, resilience, and love, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with all of you.

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this episode, it’s the importance of cherishing the people in your life. Life is unpredictable, but through love, connection, and resilience, we can find joy in the journey.
