The Power of Resilience: A Journey with Richard Franco
Hey, Resilientites! I’m Naketa Ross, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Resilient Life blog, where we dive deep into the transformative power of resilience. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been with us for a while, you're in the right place to discover the tools and insights that will help you build a stronger, more resilient life. My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.
In a recent episode of Resilient Life, I had the privilege of sitting down with Richard Franco, Director of Marketing Communications for the Phoenix Union High School District and a dedicated dog dad. Our conversation was filled with insights, reflections, and a deep dive into what resilience truly means.
Understanding Resilience
When asked to define resilience, Richard took an interesting approach—by first exploring its opposite. He found that the opposite of resilience is inflexibility, rigidity, and fragility. This helped him refine his definition: resilience is not just about surviving difficult situations, but about emerging better and stronger on the other side. It's a process of growth, learning, and improvement, rather than just a mere reaction to adversity.
Richard emphasized that resilience is situational. He shared that he's been doing a lot of personal work to become more mindful, to understand who he is, and to focus on what serves him best. He acknowledged that while he may not be resilient in all situations, his goal is to cultivate resilience across every aspect of his life.
The Path to Mindfulness
Our conversation naturally flowed into the topic of mindfulness, which Richard described as a crucial part of his resilience journey. For him, mindfulness became essential after facing some significant health challenges. These challenges pushed him to take control of his life and start making positive changes—not just in his physical health, but also in his mental and emotional well-being.
Richard's mindfulness practice has been transformative. He shared how it has helped him become more present, more connected with himself, and more aware of the little victories that contribute to his overall growth. These small wins, whether it's being able to meditate longer or walk his dogs without feeling exhausted, are the building blocks of his resilience.
Meditation: A Tool for Resilience
One of the most powerful tools in Richard's mindfulness practice is meditation. He candidly shared his journey with meditation, acknowledging that it hasn't been easy. Like many of us, he struggles with the constant flow of thoughts during meditation. But instead of seeing this as a failure, Richard views it as part of the process. The key, he says, is not to stop the thoughts but to recognize them and gently bring yourself back to center.
Richard's approach to meditation is refreshing. He emphasizes that there is no perfect way to meditate and that it's okay for your mind to wander. The practice lies in bringing yourself back, again and again, without judgment. This practice of returning to the present moment, of allowing yourself grace, has helped Richard extend his meditation sessions and deepen his connection with himself.
Finding Joy in the Present
Richard's journey towards mindfulness and resilience is beautifully complemented by his love for his dogs, Layla and Bella. He describes them as constant reminders of what it means to be present. Dogs live in the moment—they aren't worried about the future or dwelling on the past. This simple but profound lesson has taught Richard to be more mindful and to appreciate the here and now.
Music is another source of joy for Richard. Although he no longer creates music as he once did, it remains a vital part of his life. Music, he says, elevates his energy and brings a sense of peace and happiness that supports his overall well-being.
The Healthiest Choice: Meditation
When asked about the healthiest thing he's done for himself, Richard immediately pointed to meditation. For him, meditation has been life-changing. It has given him the ability to quiet his mind, to separate helpful thoughts from those that are not, and to gain control over his mental landscape. Through meditation, Richard has learned that while we may not control the thoughts that come to us, we do control which thoughts we assign value to.
Final Thoughts: Each step forward, each moment of mindfulness, contributes to our resilience.
As we wrapped up our conversation, Richard reflected on the importance of recognizing our growth, no matter how small. Richard’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, mindfulness, and the simple act of being present.
I left our conversation with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of what it means to be resilient. Richard's story is a reminder that resilience isn't about never facing challenges—it's about how we respond to them, grow from them, and ultimately, emerge stronger on the other side.
Thank you, Richard, for sharing your journey with us and for inspiring us all to be a little more resilient, mindful, and present in our own lives.
