Taking Control: The Power of Self-Management in a Chaotic World

Hey, Resilientites! I’m Naketa Ross, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Resilient Life blog, where we dive deep into the transformative power of resilience. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been with us for a while, you're in the right place to discover the tools and insights that will help you build a stronger, more resilient life. My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.

Today, we’re diving into a topic that often gets overlooked but plays a significant role in our daily lives: control. We all strive for happiness and peace, steering clear of anger, sadness, or hurt. In our pursuit of these positive emotions, it's natural to want to control various aspects of our lives—our surroundings, relationships, and even how others behave. But have you ever stopped to think about who or what truly controls you?

The immediate answer might be, "I control me. I’m in control." But consider those moments when someone’s words or actions made you feel angry, hurt, or embarrassed. In those instances, who was really in control? This isn’t about blame or judgment—I’ve been there too. The truth is, while we can’t control what others say or do, we do have control over ourselves: our thoughts, actions, and reactions.

It’s easy to forget this when emotions are high, but let’s break down what we can control and how embracing this control can lead to a more empowered life.

Control Over Our Thoughts

Our thoughts shape how we perceive the world and influence our actions. We have the choice to focus on the positive or dwell on the negative. By consciously choosing to think positively, we create a reality that reflects those thoughts. This doesn’t mean ignoring challenges but rather approaching them with a mindset that seeks solutions and growth.

Control Over Our Actions

Our actions are a direct reflection of our thoughts. In any situation, we have the power to choose how we act. We can react impulsively or respond thoughtfully. By being mindful of our actions, we not only influence our own lives but also create a ripple effect that impacts those around us. Choosing kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness can lead to a more positive environment.

Control Over Our Attitude

Life is unpredictable, and we can’t control everything that happens to us. However, we can control our attitude toward these events. We can choose to be optimistic and find the silver lining, or we can let negativity take over. Our attitude significantly affects how we navigate through life’s challenges, making it a crucial element of control.

Control Over Our Choices

Every day, we’re faced with choices. While we can’t control the options available to us, we do have the power to choose what’s best for ourselves. How we spend our time, who we surround ourselves with, and how we handle difficulties are all within our control. By making conscious choices, we can shape our lives in a way that aligns with our values and goals.

Control Over Our Self-Care

Our physical, mental, and emotional well-being is in our hands. We have the choice to take care of ourselves—through healthy eating, exercise, and self-care practices. Prioritizing mental health, seeking help when needed, and practicing self-love and forgiveness are essential. When we take care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to handle the things beyond our control.

What We Can’t Control—and How to Let Go

It’s important to acknowledge that there are things beyond our control, such as the weather, other people’s words and actions, and unexpected events. Stressing over these things only consumes our energy. Instead, we should focus on what we can control and learn to let go of the rest. I still struggle with this, but I’ve found some strategies that help:

1. Take a Deep Breath: Remind yourself that other people’s actions don’t define your worth. Their words and behaviors are a reflection of them, not you.

2. Step Back: If emotions are running high, take a moment to walk away, gather your thoughts, and calm down.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Meditation can be a powerful tool to regain control over your emotions and reactions.

4. Communicate Calmly: Express how you feel without blaming or accusing. This approach fosters understanding rather than conflict.

5. Focus on Solutions: Instead of dwelling on negative emotions, ask yourself, “What can I do to feel better right now?” Engaging in a hobby, talking to a friend, or journaling can help.

Remember, it’s normal to experience a wide range of emotions, but by practicing these strategies, we can manage them in a way that aligns with our true selves. Taking control of how we feel, think, and act is a journey, but with each step, we become more empowered to live a happier, more peaceful life.

Final Thoughts: We have control over our thoughts, actions, attitudes, choices, and self-care.

By focusing on these areas, we can create a sense of control and contentment within ourselves. Remember, self-control is the most consistent and reliable form of control. Let’s use this knowledge to live our lives to the fullest and make the best of every situation.
