The Power of Resilience: A Journey of Growth and Self-Discovery

Hey, Resilientites! I’m Naketa Ross, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Resilient Life blog, where we dive deep into the transformative power of resilience. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been with us for a while, you're in the right place to discover the tools and insights that will help you build a stronger, more resilient life. My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.

Resilience is something we all possess, even when we don’t recognize it. We often get caught up in society's notion of success—believing we need fame, wealth, or extraordinary accomplishments to celebrate ourselves. But the truth is, resilience lives within us all. No matter what life throws at us, we have the capacity to rise, even if we don’t always see it.

My Journey: From Pain to Purpose

For me, resilience became more than just a concept; it was a lifeline. I grew up in an environment of abuse and neglect, bouncing from one foster home to the next. As a young mother, I found myself homeless with a six-month-old daughter. I was lost and felt like I had no worth. Yet, somehow, I pushed through.

It wasn't until I was in college, studying child development, that I began to understand resilience on a deeper level. I asked one of my professors how two siblings could grow up in the same household but experience life so differently. The answer? Resilience. That revelation sparked a lifelong journey to understand and nurture resilience, not only in myself but in others too.

Understanding Resilience

That discovery led me down a 15-year path of research and self-discovery. It started with therapy—my way of understanding and healing from my own traumas. From there, my curiosity and determination grew. I began studying resilience in-depth, and my university even fully funded my research on the subject. That was a pivotal moment for me. Presenting my findings in front of a large audience was a testament to my own resilience—a way to show that despite my past, I was capable of greatness.

After my undergraduate studies, I worked as a social worker, helping young people—many of whom were aging out of the foster care system—build their resilience. I asked them what they needed, what they weren’t getting, and how I could help. Their answers were the foundation of the nonprofit I eventually started, dedicated to increasing resilience among foster youth, a cause deeply personal to me.

Building a Community of Resilience

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside young adults as they learned to believe in themselves, develop self-love, and make positive life decisions. I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of resilience—how it helps people rise from the most difficult circumstances and step into a better version of themselves.

But I didn’t stop there. I extended my work to adults, helping them develop their resilience as well. What I found was that the core of resilience is universal. It transcends age, race, gender, and life experience. We all go through hard times, and we all have the potential to grow from them.

Resilience Is Not About Perfection

One misconception I often encounter is that resilience means being unbothered by difficulties, always bouncing back with a smile. That’s not resilience at all. True resilience acknowledges the pain, the struggle, and the setbacks. It’s okay to cry, to feel exhausted, and to need time to heal. Resilience is about getting back up, not immediately, but when you’re ready—and when you do, you grow from the experience.

I often say that if you look up the word "resilience," you might see my picture there—not because I’ve mastered it, but because I embody it. My life has been a series of trials and triumphs, of being knocked down and getting back up, stronger and wiser each time. And that’s what resilience means to me. It’s not about pretending everything is okay; it’s about acknowledging the struggle and choosing to keep going, even when it’s hard.

Final Thoughts: Resilience is something we all have within us.

It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you’ve been through—there’s always room to grow, to heal, and to move forward. Whether you’re in the midst of a storm or reflecting on past challenges, know that resilience is there, waiting to help you rise.

I hope this post has given you some tools to connect with your own resilience. Remember, resilience isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Be proud of every step you take, no matter how small.
