My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.

Today, I had the honor of speaking with Kareem Neal, a remarkable educator with over 27 years of experience, currently teaching at Maryville High School in the Phoenix Union High School District. Kareem's dedication to his students, particularly those in self-contained special education classrooms, is nothing short of inspiring. His passion for teaching and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of his students is a powerful testament to resilience in action.

Meet Kareem Neal, A Passionate Educator

Kareem Neal is a high school self-contained special education teacher, and his journey in education is as impressive as it is impactful. With 17 years at Maryville High School under his belt, Kareem's love for his job is unwavering. His accolades, including being named Arizona State Teacher of the Year in 2019 and the first Arizona teacher inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 2022, only scratch the surface of his dedication and influence.

Kareem's students, who range in age from 14 to 18 (and sometimes older), have varying needs, often including significant physical and intellectual challenges. His classroom is designed to meet these needs through individualized education plans (IEPs) that cater to each student's strengths and goals. In Kareem's words, "Their progress is determined much more by IEPs than standard grading." This tailored approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to learn in an environment that respects and supports their unique needs.

The Beauty of a Self-Contained Classroom

When asked about the nature of a self-contained classroom, Kareem explained it as a space where students with significant needs receive specialized instruction. These students often face challenges in both learning and physical mobility, making the classroom environment crucial for their success. Kareem's approach to teaching is not just about delivering content but about making it accessible and meaningful for each student.

Kareem's classroom is a place where learning is not just possible but joyful. "If you've been in a self-contained classroom and you're not smiling, I don't know who you are," he remarked. His students, who genuinely enjoy coming to school, create a community filled with fun and love—a rarity in many high school settings. Kareem's ability to foster such an environment speaks volumes about his commitment to his students' well-being and success.

Resilience in Action: A Lesson for Us All

When it comes to resilience, Kareem's perspective is both insightful and relatable. He sees resilience in the way his students overcome their daily challenges, whether they are physical, intellectual, or environmental. "The resiliency it takes to keep showing up is something that I admire in other people," he shared. For Kareem, resilience is about pushing through obstacles and striving for success, no matter the difficulty.

On a personal level, Kareem reflects on how he has cultivated resilience throughout his life. From his early days as a teacher to his current role, he has faced challenges that required him to step outside his comfort zone and continuously seek growth. "Now I do not do that. Now I am like, I can give my kids something better," he said, highlighting his commitment to never resting on his laurels and always striving to improve.

Finding Joy in the Journey

Kareem's positive outlook is deeply influenced by his mother, who taught him the importance of finding joy even in the toughest of times. This lesson has stayed with him throughout his career, and it’s evident in the way he approaches each day with a smile. "If you've been in a self-contained classroom and you're not smiling, woof, I don't know who you are," he said, emphasizing the importance of seeking out reasons to smile and appreciate life’s small joys.

Final Thoughts: Kareem Neal's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated educators can have on the lives of their students.

His approach to teaching, rooted in empathy, resilience, and a deep commitment to his students' success, is an inspiration to us all. As we navigate our own challenges, let Kareem's words encourage us to push through obstacles, seek growth, and always find reasons to smile.
