Exploring Resiliency: Tools and Insights from the Resilient Life® Workbook

Hey, Resilientites! I’m Naketa Ross, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Resilient Life blog, where we dive deep into the transformative power of resilience. Whether you're here for the first time or you've been with us for a while, you're in the right place to discover the tools and insights that will help you build a stronger, more resilient life. My purpose is simple: to guide you toward living your best life by empowering you with the strategies and mindset shifts needed to connect with and enhance your resilience. Let’s embark on this journey together—because you’re stronger than you think, and your best life is within reach.

In recent episodes of the Resilient Life podcast, it’s been enlightening, educational, and truly amazing to speak with so many individuals about what resiliency means to them and how it has shown up in their lives. These conversations have not only provided fresh perspectives but have also allowed me to grow in my own understanding of resilience.

Having been taught the concept of resilience for so long, I found it refreshing to dive deeper and see how others define and experience it. This journey inspired me to create a tool for those who want to work on their resiliency, whether alone, in a book club, or within a study group. The result of this inspiration is the Resilient Life Workbook, which is now also available in Spanish.

What’s Inside the Resilient Life Workbook?

The Resilient Life Workbook is a highly interactive resource designed to help you increase your resiliency across various areas of life, such as self-esteem, goal setting, and building a stronger support network. One of the activities featured in the workbook is the "Cards Activity," which I want to focus on today.

The workbook contains several activities, each thoughtfully designed with a description, instructions, the purpose of the activity, and how it will benefit you. But today, we’re diving into one of my favorites—the Cards Activity.

The Power of the Cards, An  Activity

The Cards Activity is one of the most impactful exercises in the workbook. Each card in the deck has an emotion printed on one side, while the other side is blank. The goal is simple yet profound: identify, connect with, express, and resolve your feelings.

Many of us struggle to grasp the emotions we’re experiencing at any given moment. These cards are an excellent tool for helping you name and understand your feelings. Over the years, I’ve used these cards countless times in workshops, and they always receive a warm reception. Participants often ask, "Did you bring the cards?" when I return for another session.

What makes these cards so special is their ability to allow you to be vulnerable, either privately or in a group setting. You can use them alone or with others, making them versatile. For example, you might wake up one day feeling something, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. These cards help you sift through your emotions until you find the ones that resonate.

Embracing Complex Emotions

One of the most enlightening aspects of using the Cards Activity is realizing that we are complex beings capable of experiencing multiple emotions simultaneously. For the longest time, I believed that if I was feeling angry, that could be the only emotion I was experiencing. But these cards taught me that I could be angry, frustrated, sad, scared, and hopeful all at the same time.

This realization is a powerful tool for increasing resilience. The ability to identify and connect with multiple emotions helps us process them more effectively. Whether you’re feeling powerful, sarcastic, focused, or negative, these cards allow you to explore the "why" behind each emotion. They help you connect with the underlying causes and offer a way to tap into positive emotions again when needed.

The Importance of Identifying and Processing Emotions

Working with these cards has shown me that it’s crucial to identify, connect with, and process our emotions. By doing so, we can begin to release them, which is essential for maintaining emotional health. The cards even include two blank cards, allowing you to explore feelings of numbness or emotions that aren’t represented in the deck.

Over time, as you become more familiar with the process, you’ll likely find it easier to identify your emotions using the cards. This practice fosters a deeper connection with yourself and your emotions, which is a cornerstone of building resilience.

My Personal Experience with the Cards

If I were to use the Cards Activity right now, I would choose the card labeled "Radiant." Today has been a good day for me—I received a clean bill of health at my doctor’s appointment, and I’m feeling grateful. My needs are met, most of my wants are taken care of, and I’m in a good place in life. The Cards Activity helped me recognize that radiance is something I can tap into whenever I need to feel uplifted.

I've used this simple yet powerful exercise of identifying, connecting with, and processing emotions in countless resilience workshops. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing how helpful and wonderful they found the cards.

Final Thoughts: Resilience is not just about bouncing back from adversity; it's about understanding and managing our emotions to navigate life's challenges more effectively.

The Resilient Life Workbook and its Cards Activity offer valuable tools to help you do just that. Available in both English and Spanish, these research-based, trauma-informed tools are designed to be accessible and beneficial for everyone.

If you’re interested in increasing your resiliency, these cards are a discreet, practical tool that fits easily into your daily life. Whether you’re dealing with frustration at work or just need a moment to center yourself, these cards can help you ground your emotions and build your resilience.
